Square Yard to Square Kilometer

Carpet has been sold by the square yard in the US since it was manufactured in standard 12-foot-wide rolls — 3 yards wide. Measuring room dimensions in yards and multiplying gave the number of yd² needed directly from the roll width. The tradition persists even as some retailers have shifted to ft². The conversion is 1 yd² = 9 ft², so a 100 yd² quote equals 900 ft² — a fact worth verifying when comparing carpet estimates.

The playing field is 100 yards × 53.33 yards = 5,333 yd² (with end zones it is 120 × 53.33 = 6,400 yd²). This is approximately 4,459 m² or about 0.45 hectares. Football "yardage" is the defining feature of the sport — rushing and passing yards, field position, first-down distances. All distances in American football are measured in yards, making yd² a natural area unit for the sport.

Fabric is sold in linear yards — the length of fabric from the bolt (which has a fixed width, usually 44–60 inches for quilting fabric, 54–60 inches for upholstery). When you buy "2 yards" of fabric you get a piece 2 yards long × the full bolt width. Patterns specify "2½ yards of 44-inch fabric" — you multiply 2.5 × (44/36) ÷ 9 to get yd² if needed. Tile and flooring are sold by yd² or ft²; fabric almost always by linear yard.

The UK officially metricated land measurement under the Weights and Measures Act 1985, mandating m² for official purposes. In practice, residential property was quoted in ft² and yd² through the 1980s–1990s. By the 2000s, m² dominated professional surveying and estate agency descriptions in Scotland and Wales. England is still transitioning — many listings show both ft² and m² today, with yd² now virtually absent.

US concrete contractors bid per square yard of surface area for flatwork (patios, driveways, footpaths). Standard concrete thickness is 4 inches (one third of a foot), so 1 yd² × 0.333 ft deep = 0.333 ft³. One cubic yard (27 ft³) of concrete covers 27 ÷ 0.333 = 81 ft² = 9 yd² at 4-inch depth. Concrete is ordered in cubic yards, making yd² convenient as an intermediate unit.

Vatican City is the smallest sovereign state at just 0.44 km². Monaco is 2.02 km², San Marino 61 km². For comparison, Liechtenstein is 160 km² and Luxembourg 2,586 km². The world's largest country, Russia, covers 17,098,242 km² — nearly 39 million times the area of Vatican City. Russia spans 11 time zones and contains 13% of the world's land area.

Global deforestation removes approximately 50,000–100,000 km² of forest per year. Brazil lost roughly 11,568 km² of Amazon rainforest in 2022 alone. For scale, that is an area larger than Jamaica disappearing every year. At peak deforestation rates in the 1990s, Brazil was losing 29,000 km²/year. Satellite monitoring (PRODES, Global Forest Watch) now tracks loss in near real-time at 30 m resolution.

Population density (people per km²) is a key demographic statistic. Monaco is the most densely populated state at about 26,000 people/km². Bangladesh is the most populous large country at ~1,300/km². Australia averages 3.5/km². Mongolia is the least dense large country at 2/km². For cities, Manila reaches over 100,000/km² in its densest districts, making it one of the most densely populated urban areas on Earth.

Estimates range from 700,000 km² to 1,600,000 km² — larger than France to twice the size of Texas. However, the "patch" is misleading: it is not a solid island but a high-concentration zone of microplastic particles dispersed through the upper water column. Cleanup is extremely difficult because the particles are spread over such an enormous area at low density per m².

Major wildfires are tracked in km² or, in the US, in acres. The 2019–2020 Australian Black Summer fires burned approximately 186,000 km² — an area larger than Syria. The 2021 Dixie Fire in California burned 1,900 km², the largest single fire in California history. The 2023 Canadian wildfires burned a record 180,000+ km² of forest, releasing more CO₂ than Canada's annual human emissions.
