About Joules/minute (J/min)

Joules per minute (J/min) is a low-power rate unit, useful for expressing the power of very slow processes — chemical reactions, biological heat production, or low-intensity heating — where per-second rates produce inconveniently small numbers. One joule per minute equals approximately 0.01667 watts. It is rarely used in engineering practice but appears in laboratory chemistry, calorimetry, and physiology research where the timescale of interest is minutes rather than seconds.

Resting human metabolism produces roughly 5,000 J/min (about 83 W) of heat. A slow chemical reaction releasing 1 J/min produces barely perceptible warmth.

About Horsepower (British) (hp)

British horsepower (hp) equals 745.699872 watts, derived from James Watt's original definition of 33,000 ft·lbf/min. It is used in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries for engine power ratings and is very close to — but not identical with — the international horsepower. The British hp is approximately 1.4% more than the metric hp (PS) and essentially identical to the international hp. UK automotive specifications may use either hp or PS depending on the manufacturer.

Reporting 350 J/min is more meaningful in context than 5.83 W, because the researcher thinks in minutes. It's the same reason we say "km per hour" for driving rather than "meters per second" — matching the unit to the human timescale of the observation.

Divide by 60. Since 1 W = 1 J/s and there are 60 seconds per minute, 60 J/min = 1 W. So 6,000 J/min = 100 W. For a quick mental approximation, drop two zeros and add two-thirds: 6,000 → 60 + 40 = 100 W. Going the other direction, multiply watts by 60: a 100 W bulb = 6,000 J/min. It's one of the easier unit conversions because 60 is such a clean number.

Cellular respiration rates in isolated mitochondria, enzyme reaction kinetics (heat of reaction per minute), metabolic rates of small organisms in respirometry chambers, and wound healing energy expenditure. Watt's definition was deliberately generous — he wanted his steam engines to look good compared to the horses they replaced. A fit human can sustain about 0.1 hp and peak at ~1–2 hp briefly. So a horse is roughly 7× a human in sustained output, which aligns well with historical accounts of animal labor replacing human workers.

Because American engineering inherited the British unit directly — the US was a British colony when Watt defined horsepower in the 1780s. Both equal 550 ft·lbf/s = 33,000 ft·lbf/min = 745.7 W. The "international" horsepower adopted in 1956 formalised this same value. The only reason it's sometimes called "British" is to distinguish it from the metric horsepower (PS) used in continental Europe, which is 1.4% smaller.
